SAA's Capacity Building Program
Human Resource Development in Agricultural Extension
Human Resource Development in Ethiopia’s agricultural extension is vital for modernizing smallholder farming. Public extension services lack capacity, with most agents underqualified and male-dominated, limiting outreach to women farmers. Recognizing this gap, SAA launched the SAFE initiative in 1997 to strengthen mid-career professionals’ technical and human relations skills. Integrated into SAA in 2018, SAFE now operates in ten universities, building demand-driven curricula and training extension staff. With over 25 years of experience, SAA addresses food security, market development, and climate change by fostering skilled, gender-balanced advisory services, ensuring sustainable agricultural modernization and improved support for marginalized farmers across Ethiopia.
