4.1.1. Female Reproductive System
The female reproductive system of the cow is composed of several organs, each with specific functions that together ensure reproduction. These structures are illustrated in the figure below.
The main organs include:
1. Ovaries
Located near the kidneys, they produce eggs (ova) and secrete important hormones (estrogen and progesterone) that regulate the oestrus cycle and maintain pregnancy.
2. Oviducts (Fallopian tubes)
Tubes that transport the ova from the ovaries to the uterus and are typically the site where fertilization occurs.
3. Uterus
A muscular Y-shaped organ (comprising two uterine horns and a body) where the fertilized egg implants and the fetus develops until birth.
4. Cervix
A thick, muscular canal acting as a gatekeeper between the uterus and vagina, protecting the uterus from infections and opening during estrus and calving.
5. Vagina
The passage that receives the penis during mating and serves as the birth canal at calving.
6. Vulva
The external part of the reproductive system, which shows visual signs of heat (swelling, redness, mucus discharge).n the uterus and vagina, protecting the uterus from infections and opening during estrus and calving.
