This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the science and practice of dairy cattle production and management. It explores the historical development and global significance of the dairy industry, with a special emphasis on Ethiopia’s dairy potential and constraints. Learners will study major dairy breeds, their characteristics and suitability under different production systems, and acquire practical knowledge of site selection, housing, and management of dairy herds across all physiological stages.
Key topics include reproduction and breeding strategies, feeding and nutrition tailored to the diverse needs of dairy animals, and an in-depth look at lactation physiology, milking procedures, and milk quality management. The module also emphasizes dairy herd health, welfare practices, sustainable production systems, and methods to mitigate environmental impacts. Students will engage with body condition scoring, cattle judging, and essential record-keeping practices to enhance farm decision-making and productivity.
By integrating theoretical instruction with practical demonstrations and discussions, this module aims to develop students’ technical skills, critical thinking, and entrepreneurial mindset, preparing them to address the opportunities and challenges of dairy farming in Ethiopia and beyond.
